Massage Therapist: The Professional

Massage therapy is fast becoming one of the most serious of professions and it is believed that in the next ten years, employment in the filed will rise exponentially as people start to realize all the benefits of the therapy itself.  As a massage therapist, a person can also expect a ton of customers in the same amount of time.

The massage therapist occupation is not something that is new to society.  Physicians have actually been recommending massage therapy for over 2,000 years!  The therapy is used to treat painful conditions as well as to decompress tired muscles, reduce stress, and promote overall general health.  By applying certain amounts of pressure to muscles through various techniques, a massage therapist is able to remove waste products from those muscles and improve the circulation of blood which in turn results in relief and better health.  A massage therapist is usually one who practices massage as a medical benefit even though a massage can be given to attain a simple state of relaxation.

A lot of people may think that the massage therapist profession is not one to be taken seriously.  But contrary to what people may think, the profession itself is very serious.  It is also taken very seriously; so much so that there are many universities those even offers massage therapy as a professional course.  At present, one can attend many different schools to take up subjects in order to become a professional massage therapist.  It is also not surprising anymore to see small clinics popping out of nowhere, all of them offering massage therapy advice and application to those to seek better health and healing.

A true and licensed massage therapist is expected to know at least 80 different styles of massage therapy.  These styles are also referred to as modalities.  Some of the few that come to mind can include Swedish massage, reflexology, acupressure, and neuromuscular massage.  A massage therapist can be different from another in their modality specialization.  This is the reason why communication between a patient and massage therapist is important.  The massage therapist must know what kind of modality must be used for different types of ailments.  However, this can only be determined by the massage therapist once the patient has provided all the information regarding his or her condition.  A massage therapist must also consider a patients medical history in order to determine the best modalities to be applied.

There are reasons why a massage therapist has to take a proper medical course from a reputable school.  A person who can give a good massage cannot be called a massage therapist if he or she does not know the medical concepts behind the structured modalities.  A real massage therapist is taught much in the way many doctors are taught in medical theory and application.  It is these theories that help medical therapists around the world know exactly how to treat different ailments just by using different massage therapies; thereby giving the massage therapist the right to be referred to as a doctor as well.
