The Importance of Using a Massage Table

Like any person with a medical profession, a massage therapist also has a set of tools beyond his or her hands.  Included in a list of massage therapy tools is the massage table, one of the major requirements for massage therapy sessions.  A massage table is used by massage therapists so that they can work around a patient without requiring the patient to move around so much.  It is essential that a patient in a massage session is relaxed completely and lying down on a massage table is one way for this to be made possible.

The massage table is a practical tool in massage therapy.  It allows the therapist to move around it at a fast pace and helps the patient to relax throughout the whole therapy session.  With the body relaxed on a massage table, a therapist will be able to use any of the modalities effectively since all parts of the body will be accessible.  This will also make it easier for the therapist since he or she will not strain too much to reach different parts of the body such as the feet or even around the area of the head.

You might be thinking that any table will suffice for a massage therapy.  While this may be true, a professional massage table does have different features when compared to a regular table or surface where a person can lie down.  First of all, a massage table is designed in such a way that it is ergonomically efficient for a therapist to work around and comfortable enough for a patient to relax in.  The relaxation of a patient is important in a successful massage session.  This is why all massage tables are also cushioned; the softness helps people to relax while lying on the massage table.  Another main difference is that patients who go through a full-body massage usually are required to lie face down.  So to support the head and to avoid suffocation, a horse-shoe shaped hole is built in where the face can fit.  This part of the massage table allows the patient to breathe easy while the session is taking place.

For massage therapists, the massage table is an essential tool.  It can be adjusted in height and parts of it can also be raised according to the modality that will be sued in treating patients.  A massage table can also come in portable variations so that a massage therapist can take his or her work into the homes of different patients.  The portable massage table is important especially when a massage therapist is treating a patient who does not have the strength to take a step out the door.  Unlike the massage chair, a massage table is usually used with modalities that require patients to disrobe.  In many countries, the patients are encouraged to use towels to cover sensitive areas of their bodies but the parts that will need therapy should be exposed during therapy like the head, torso, legs, and feet.
